Acrobats are used to doing the rounds, but for Aussie performers Nelson Smyles and Helena Merten, being back on home soil is a new kind of “full-circle” moment.
Cirque du Soleil’s LUZIA is making a splash in Sydney with an extended run of 15 extra shows, thanks to high-flying demand.
Smyles and Merten have been dazzling audiences with LUZIA since 2017, but returning to Sydney brings special significance.
“Sydney is not only the place where I saw my first Cirque du Soleil show, but also where I first started training in gymnastics all those years ago,” Smyles said. “I’m so excited to finally perform there, and even more excited we get to do it for two extra weeks.”
Set against Mexico’s vibrant landscape, LUZIA—a name combining the Spanish words for “light” (luz) and “rain” (lluvia)—embodies a fusion of storytelling and performance.
As Cirque du Soleil’s 38th production, it’s the first to incorporate rain into its acrobatic scenes, using 10,000 litres of recycled water carefully maintained at 39 degrees Celsius throughout the tour.
Since its Australian debut earlier this year, the show has already mesmerised over 150,000 people in Melbourne alone. The innovative use of water has set LUZIA apart in a landscape known for pushing live performance boundaries.
This is Cirque du Soleil’s 10th Big Top show to visit Australia in the past 25 years, marking a significant chapter in the company’s history Down Under.
LUZIA begins at the Entertainment Quarter on November 24 and will now run until February 2, marking the grand finale of its Australian tour.
