'I'm an innocent man': Craig McLachlan's defamation trial explained

The woman who claimed she was harassed by Craig McLachlan during a production of The Rocky Horror Show musical has filed a complaint with the Australian Human Rights Commission, claiming she was exposed to “unsafe” work conditions.

In 2020, McLachlan was found not guilty of all offences relating to his co-stars on The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

His co-star Christie Whelan Browne on Friday announced she had lodged a complaint with the commission against the producer of the show, then known as the Gordon Frost Organisation.

“My complaint claims that GFO contravened the Sex Discrimination Act by engaging in sex discrimination, exposing me to unsafe conditions of work, breaching its duty of care towards me, failing to meet work, health and safety standards, and permitting another employee to engage in sex discrimination and sexual harassment,” Whelan Browne wrote in a statement.

“It’s disappointing that I’ve been forced to take this step, having tried but failed on a number of occasions to have GFO properly address my complaints.”

McLachlan was charged by Victorian Police over the 2014 allegations and was found not guilty of all offences relating to his co-stars following a lengthy hearing.

Following his acquittal, he launched defamation proceedings against the ABC, Nine Newspapers and actress and co-star Christie Whelan Browne. However he discontinued the proceedings in May last year, citing mental strain on himself and his family.

In her statement on Friday, Whelan Browne did not make any reference to McLachlan.

“I am determined to stand up for myself,” she wrote.

“I do not intend to make any further comments at this stage as this matter is now in the

hands of the Commission.”
