Chris Minns will build preschools at every primary school if elected

Preschools will be built next to every new public primary school and $130 million in toll relief doled out if Labor wins the NSW election, Chris Minns has declared ahead of his budget reply speech.

There has been 'positive feedback' on free preschool policy

Preschools would be built alongside every new public primary school under a state Labor government, as part of a pledge from Opposition Leader Chris Minns to build 100 public preschools in his first term.

Mr Minns will make the commitment in his budget reply speech on Thursday, while also announcing that Labor will boost toll relief by up to $130 million per year.

Under the preschool plan, early learning facilities would be built alongside existing primary schools that are “under-utilised,” as well as all new primary schools.

The funding would come from $3.8 billion allocated to early childhood learning in Tuesday’s budget.

Mr Minns said the policy will provide a tangible benefit for parents before 2030, when the government’s universal pre-Kindergarten year is due to commence.

“Parents will tell you they can’t wait until 2030 for the Liberals and Nationals to start acting on delivering accessible and affordable preschool,” he said.

In his budget reply, Mr Minns will also announce that Labor will use money raised from drivers using the Harbour Bridge and Harbour Tunnel to pay for more toll relief.

So far Mr Minns has promised to build a preschool next to every new public primary school.

Labor will pledge to keeping the Sydney Harbour Tunnel toll concession in public hands.

“While the Premier would hand the Harbour Bridge or Harbour Tunnel over to private operators, Labor will retain this in public ownership and put all that money into toll relief.”

“This is the first step to toll relief for New South Wales motorists, under Labor, and we’ll have more to say as we get closer to the next election.”

Labor will release a full tolling package closer to the election.

Meanwhile, Mr Minns has also committed to stronger targets for domestic manufacturing and set up a NSW Jobs First Commission.

If elected, Labor will set a 50 per cent local content target for future contracts to build trains. The local manufacturing commitment goes further than a similar policy held by previous leader Jodi McKay.
