Child sex offender Rahmatullah Rezaei charged with bail breach

A child sex offender freed back onto the streets of Sydney says he is “no danger” to the community, despite being the latest immigration detainee arrested following his release.

Further detainee arrests raise concerns over Albanese ‘protecting’ his ministers

A child sex offender freed back onto the streets of Sydney says he is “no danger” to the community, despite being the latest immigration detainee arrested following his release.

Rahmatullah Rezaei has been living in a Chullora motel ever since being released from Villawood Detention Centre last November, following the High Court’s shock ruling that freed hundreds of criminals.

When NSW Police visited the 35-year-old on Tuesday they found several Facebook accounts on his mobile phone he had failed to tell them about.

Having been on the child sex offender register since 2016 when he tried to procure a child to have sex, Razaei was charged with two counts of failing to comply with his reporting obligations.

As he walked out of Bankstown Local Court on Wednesday after being given a two-year good behaviour bond for his latest offence, Rezaei insisted to The Daily Telegraph he was not a risk to society.

“No, I’m not dangerous,” he said.

“Detention is my past story … I am an easy person for Australia.

“Of course I am happy, I’m more happy than you (to be allowed to live in Australia).”

When asked about his previous offending, for which he was convicted of procuring a child for sexual activity, common assault and stalk/intimidate, Rezaei described it as a “little mistake”.

“There was some little mistake and that’s it, it’s not some serious problem … it was just a mistake,” he said.

Rezaei’s arrest and conviction came a day after the Albanese government was accused of an “outrageous cover up” after refusing to reveal if more convicted criminals have been released from immigration detention over the summer.

The Daily Telegraph also revealed the federal government will no longer alert the community if former detainees commit any state-level crimes, instead leaving arrest updates to local police.

The Prime Minister denied Labor had changed how it would report on immigration detainees released following a High Court ruling last year, despite the ABF no longer providing updates. “There’s been no change whatsoever in any of the information which is going out from that when Peter Dutton was the Home Affairs Minister,” Mr Albanese said.
