An 11-year-old boy is “sore and sorry” but “lucky to be alive” after he fell from the rooftop garden of a five-storey apartment building in Sydney’s southeast, police have said.

The boy suffered a serious leg fracture and internal injuries when he plummeted from the top of the Belle & Lily terrace apartment complex on Botany Rd, Waterloo about 3:30pm on Tuesday.

Paramedics treated the boy at the scene and raced him to The Children’s Hospital at Randwick in a critical but stable condition, where he remains in recovery.

Police were on the scene investigating the incident on Tuesday but are not treating the circumstance as suspicious.

South Sydney Police Area Commander Acting Superintendent Sean Heaney told The Daily Telegraph the 11-year-old, who lives at the apartment block, slipped and fell before an awning broke his fall.

Supt Heaney said investigations were “ongoing” but police had spoken to the boy and were “satisfied” the incident was a “terrible accident”.

“We’re satisfied the boy slipped from the top of the rooftop garden, he’s fallen in line with the underground carpark driveway below, but an awning broke his fall before he hit the ground,” Supt Heaney said.

“We’re still investigating but we’ve spoken to the boy … he’s sore and sorry but a lot better than the alternative … he’s very lucky to be alive.”
