SOME of Sydney’s best-loved cheap eat haunts have been listed on the NSW Food Authority’s latest “name and shame” file.
Bankstown’s Jasmin 1, Ashfield’s New Shanghai and New Shanghai Nights, Shanghai Stories 1938 in Chatswood and even Petersham’s famed Frango’s Portuguese Charcoal Chicken feature on the new list, some of them on multiple occasions.
Editor’s Note:
An earlier version of this story named The Star’s Buffet (the Harvest Buffet) as having been fined three times for failure to maintain proper food safety standards.
The Daily Telegraph made an error and the information published about The Harvest Buffet is entirely incorrect.
The Daily Telegraph accepts that The Harvest Buffet has never been fined and observes the highest food standards and strict food handling procedures.
The restaurant in question was in fact the Sydney Star Buffet at 108-114 Miller Street in Pyrmont, that is not connected with The Star.
Many of the state’s fast food eateries — including several Domino’s and Subway outlets — have also been shamed for having failed hygiene standards.
Among the worst offenders was renowned Bankstown Lebanese outlet Jasmin 1, which last year received seven fines. The penalties totalled $6150.
Ashfield dumpling houses New Shanghai and New Shanghai Night — both famed for xiao long bao — received five fines for offences including failure to take reasonable measures to ensure food was handled safely.
Their combined totals were $4400.
Cult chicken favourite Frango’s was fined $440 in March for failing to “maintain at or near each hand washing facility a supply of — soap and single use towels”.
It wasn’t just cheap eateries making the list.
Up-market Crows Nest steak restaurant MuMu Grill was fined twice for not eradicating pests and failing to maintain “required standards of cleanliness”.
Chatswood’s Shanghai Stories 1938 received four fines in December for failing to “ensure food contact surfaces of equipment is in a clean and sanitary condition — meat slicer, chopping board, food serving plates, bowls and machinery”.
A NSW Food Authority spokeswoman said despite hundreds of venues appearing on the “name and shame” list, only about 2 per cent of NSW food operators ended up in trouble with on-the-spot fines.
Staff at Jasmin 1 did not comment, while New Shanghai did not return calls.
