A collision between a truck and a light rail tram has sparked commuter chaos in Haymarket on Friday morning.
Police were called to the intersection of Pitt and Hay St shortly before 7am following reports of a crash.
The impact caused the tram to derail, prompting the evacuation of all passengers.
The front windscreen of the light rail tram has been smashed while the front bumper of the tram has been crushed against the side of the truck, which has collided with a traffic pole.
One man sustained minor injuries in the incident.
Police and Fire and Rescue NSW crews have taped off the area and are assessing the scene, with part of Pitt St now closed to motorists.
Transport for NSW Acting Coordinator-General Craig Moran said there was about 60 passengers on the vehicle and it may take a number of hours before services return to normal.
“There were around 60 passengers on that light rail, they’ve been safely evacuated,” he told 2GB’s Ben Fordham.
“Light rail services on the L1 coming in from Dulwich Hill, they’re currently turning around at Convention down there at Darling Harbour, so there is no light rail at the moment between Convention and Central Station.
“It has been quite a significant crash, the light rail vehicle has become derailed so it will probably take a number of hours before we will be able to get that light rail service back in operation.”
More to come.
