Celebrities, sport stars, medicos and business titans rally to support Dr Charlie Teo

They make up the high-powered Team Teo — a diverse group of surgeons, captains of industry, celebrities, singers and sportspeople who unequivocally support of Dr Charlie Teo

Doctor's ban from high-risk surgery is 'pretty ludicrous'

They make up the newly formed, high-powered Team Teo.

A diverse group of surgeons, captains of industry, celebrities, singers and sportspeople who are all unequivocally in support of Dr Charlie Teo.

Over recent days they have been flooding the controversial neurosurgeon with emails, texts, phone calls and social media posts filled with words of respect and support.

The notable Australians, and some internationals, say they have been drawn out not by the details of the case before the Health Care Complaints Commission, but by the public “vilification” and the “kill Charlie obsession” they are seeing being played out.

The coalition of supporters is not an organised group of people working together to garner support, instead they have individually reached out to show their support for the controversial surgeon whose career hangs in the balance.

The group includes two leading neurosurgeons, entertainer Hugh Jackman, champion surfer Kelly Slater, former health minister Peter Collins, singer Jimmy Barnes, actor Bryan Brown, former NRL star Benny Elias, author and painter Anh Do, Tim Farriss of INXS fame, former Virgin boss John Borghetti, media maven Ita Buttrose, singer Engelbert Humperdinck and former NSW premier Morris Iemma.

Interestingly, few doctors are prepared to speak publicly for fear they will be next, according to many Teo supporters – including Sydney businessman investor John Singleton.

One surgeon, who did not want to be named, said: “You could do to any of us what they have done to Charlie”.

“Many surgeons loathe going out on a limb to support their colleagues lest they be next,” Mr Singleton said in a letter of support for Dr Teo.

Mr Collins said he feels deeply for Dr Teo, who will return to the witness box on Monday to defend accusations he didn’t properly inform two patients of the risks of surgery, and other complaints about his handling of their cases.

“Charlie Teo is not the Pope. He’s not infallible — but he’d be the guy we would call,” Mr Collins said.

“If I received disastrous medical news I would want Charlie Teo in my corner.”

Kelly Slater, World Surf League champion

“I met Charlie when I was in a precarious situation, with my Australian family’s father probably days or weeks from death with a brain tumour.

We first spoke on a Saturday evening, and within an hour he had scheduled surgery for Wednesday.

Johnny got another great nine months of health and lived another year in total.

It was a very memorable and amazing time for his family and me personally.”

“Charlie gave my brother Will the gift of life.

“When Will was battling terminal cancer and then developed a brain tumour, Charlie operated when doctors in my brother’s medical team wouldn’t because, what was the point, he was dying.

“The point was Will got several more months of living.

“He made it to his son’s wedding and also his 62nd birthday.

“His doctors had told him he wouldn’t make either of these — he’d be dead.”

Owen Wright, Olympic surfer

“Unfortunately, I know Charlie personally after he removed a brain tumour from one of my family members.

“During that ordeal, he showed nothing but compassion and concern, and his forthright approach instilled confidence in our entire group of friends and family.

“Since then, I have come to know him as a kind and caring person and have learnt that his skills are in demand across the world.

“It begs the question … why are we trying to destroy one of the world’s best neurosurgeons?”

Steve Waugh AO, cricketer, Australian of the Year 2004

“I have known Charlie for over 20 years. He performed a lifesaving operation when my wife Lynette suffered a stroke.
“He has always been available to help my family and friends whenever a medical issue has arisen, and he does so with total commitment.”

“His own Brain Cancer Research Foundation has raised over $50 million dollars.

“This needs to be acknowledged.”

“I don’t know about his professional conduct but I know people whose lives Charlie Teo has saved.

“He changed outcomes that very few people can.”

Bill Moss AO, businessman, philanthropist

“I can’t comment on Charlie’s professional conduct, however I can comment on Charlie’s significant contribution to medical research and fundraising for a number of charities.

“Charlie’s commitment to brain research should be acknowledged.”

The Hon Morris Iemma, 40th premier of NSW, 2005-2008

“I’ve known Charlie for a lengthy period of time. He’s always presented as a good guy, willing to help and give advice.

“When a member of my family needed help, Charlie did not hesitate to lend a hand.

“Charlie’s quick and decisive action resolved the issues for our family member.”

Justin Hemmes, Merivale Group

“I’ve known Charlie for almost 20 years and he has always been incredibly generous with his time and care for people.

“I’ve been fortunate to meet families whose lives have been changed forever in the most positive way as a result of Charlie’s work.“

Mikael Borglund, Beyond International Limited CEO and managing director

“My wife and I first met Charlie socially in 2014 through a mutual friend. We were immediately taken by his intelligence, love of life, humility and generous spirit.

“Charlie’s work as a surgeon should be acknowledged, celebrated and supported — not persecuted.”

Lionel and Lisa Lee, Bing Lee

“Charlie has operated on two acquaintances, the first was a mate of mine who was given less than three months to live, Charlie was able to help Chris experience his family and life for nearly a further two years.

“The second instance was my wife’s cousin. Sarah, a mother of four young children was given a grim prognosis.

“After being seen by Charlie, Sarah was operated on the following day … that’s what Charlie is like … he will drop everything to help people in need.

“Sarah’s case was nearly five years ago … and she is healthy in every way.”

Bruce Robinson AC, Professor and past dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sydney

“Charlie has promoted research and awareness of brain cancer, and has done much to help many people.

“His surgical skill is not doubted, but his judgment has been questioned by his peers.

“On balance, history should judge him positively.”

Paul Dainty AM, CEO TEG Dainty

“I can’t comment medically, but Charlie has always been a good and caring person.”

Paul Christie, Mondo Rock

“Charlie is a voice of reason, a dedicated medical person who helps with the right advice.

“We are talking about a highly skilled surgeon and medical mind whose No.1 priority is curing and helping. His core focus is not billing.”

Marcus Blackmore AM, businessman, philanthropist

“The practice of medicine is resplendent with many outstanding practitioners of their art. However the current vilification of Dr Charlie Teo is both contemptuous and misplaced.”

Dr Gene Sherman AM, academic, philanthropist

“History tells us that pioneers, visionaries and creatives who step outside of accepted boundaries have often been misunderstood, vilified and, in the most famous case of all, veritably crucified.

“Charlie Teo is clearly a brilliant surgeon, a seeker of new horizons and a deeply empathetic human being.”

Graeme Hughes, Australian sporting legend

“I waited as Charlie operated for hours on my workmate, Gavin Robertson, saving him and offering up so much hope for his future.

“Didn’t know back then I would need him as well. “

Nigel Marsh, author and co-founder of The Sydney Skinny and Earth Hour

“I find it impossible to relate some of the things I have been reading in the press with the man I personally have dealt with on numerous occasions over the years.”

Gina Rinehart AO, Hancock Prospecting chairman, philanthropist

“I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Charlie and have witnessed first-hand his compassion, kindness and dogged perseverance in his attempt to keep my beloved goddaughter alive to spend that extra, valuable time with her children before she passed away with metastatic cancer.

“If Charlie was able to save or prolong just one life, he’d be a hero. But Charlie has actually helped so many people.”

Tim Farriss, INXS

“The current media attack on Teo is totally unfair on him and his reputation as a brilliant doctor who does everything humanly possible to save lives and give hope to those who, without his help, would have none at all.

“People die on the operating table during all kinds surgery.

“Brain surgery takes a person with absolute courage and self-confidence to perform, and sadly, that can easily be construed as cockiness or ego.”

Leo Sayer, entertainer, philanthropist

“I have been a proud friend and supporter of Charlie Teo’s for over 10 years now.

“I’m finding it hard to believe some of the things that are currently being said and written about him.

“Here is a guy who’s always put medical ethics and communication first.

“I’m in Charlie’s corner.”

Vince Sorrenti, comedian

“I have met Charlie at many charity functions over the years.

“Thankfully I have never needed his services, so I can’t comment on his bedside manner or his surgical skills.

“I can say, however, that on all of those occasions the man I have met is not the man who the media are wanting us to believe.”

John Borghetti, businessman

“I have known Charlie for almost two decades now and thankfully have never required his surgical talent.

“I have met some of his patients at charity functions, and I know first-hand his passion and relentless drive to raise awareness and funds for brain cancer research.

“For this achievement alone, he deserves our respect and thanks.”

John Barilaro, 18th deputy premier of NSW

“Charlie Teo is an iconic Australian who has devoted his life to the treatment of patients with brain cancer.

“He does not deserve the relentless and malicious accusations and allegations that are being thrown his way simply for standing head and shoulders above the crowd.”

“I am proud to call Charlie a mate.

“In true Aussie vernacular, a mate is someone on whom you can always depend, who would give you the shirt off their back and who treats the wealthy and poor equally.

James Morrison AM, musician

“My family and I have been the beneficiaries of Dr Teo’s expertise, advice and kindness, and we find it incredible that someone who has contributed so much to his field and helped so many is being treated this way. ”

Steve Anastasiou, businessman, philanthropist

“I attend many charity functions and the Charlie Teo Foundation Ball was arguably the best and most inspiring.

“He has mandated that administration costs remain below 20 per cent, that all P&Ls are transparent and that its task is to find ‘disruptive thinkers’.”

Nick Paspaley, Paspaley Group

“I have known Charlie Teo for many years.

“He has always been very helpful when I have needed his advice. On each occasion he has shown me genuine concern and has enthusiastically followed up with further advice.

“I am aware of his tremendous fundraising efforts to pay for brain cancer research.

“Hopefully, through Charlie’s cancer research program, cures will be found for brain cancers for which there is presently no treatment.”

Trevor Chappell, cricket legend

“I know Charlie from charity events. He is a tireless advocate for those with, or those who may get, brain cancer.

“He is a nice guy who seems very kind and considerate.

“He has operated on several cricketers and family members of cricketers with great success.

“I support him unequivocally.”

Engelbert Humperdinck, entertainer

“I have had the pleasure of meeting Charlie Teo on several occasions during my many trips to Sydney over the years.

“On the last occasion I was with my dear wife Patricia (who has sadly since passed away due to her battle with dementia).

“Charlie and I had some lengthy conversations about her dreaded disease, where he informed me that there was nothing he could do from a surgical point of view — and prepared me for what the future most likely looked like for her and my family.

“I have always appreciated his honesty and straightforwardness.

“I consider Charlie to be a friend and — having met some of his former patients — a genius surgeon.”

Peter Collins AM, RFD, KC, RANR, former leader of the opposition and health minister

“Charlie Teo is not the Pope. He’s not infallible — but he’d be the guy we would call.

“Charlie has dedicated his career to taking on the hardest cases. Inevitably not all of those are going to work out, but if I received disastrous medical news I would want Charlie Teo in my corner.

“I feel deeply feel for him. We cannot afford to lose such a great surgeon

Paul Signorelli OAM, businessman, philanthropist

“I have known Charlie for many years and have hosted many events for him. He is always available to help anyone whenever I reach out. He has personally helped some of my family members who have had brain cancer and have been cured via the treatment of Charlie Teo. He does not deserve to be treated and persecuted in this manner.”

“(He’s) a man broken because he can’t practice his vocation and his passion.

“He understands that this attack will shorten his life. I know that. But he can’t escape the inevitable force that drives him, the desire to help other.”

Helen Coonan, former Minister for Communications

“From conversations with Charlie it is clear that he recognises and understands that there are people suffering greatly both for themselves and their families from a terrible and often incurable disease.

“He is a caring and compassionate human being and quite apart from any issue related to professional conduct about which I cannot comment, his genuine concern for others is reflected in the millions of dollars he has galvanised in support for Brain Cancer Research. “These philanthropic efforts and good intentions must weigh in his favour in any character assessment he undergoes.”

Seth Troxler, American DJ and record producer

“Charlie Teo is no doubt a maverick. My time spent with him, enriched me by firsthand experiencing his dedication to healing. His tenacity and belief that no challenge cannot be overcome.

“I know a family directly impacted by Charlie’s work, as he saved a friend’s daughter’s life.

“I lost a dear friend for whom I climbed Kilimanjaro with Charlie and then, later, my grandmother to brain cancer. It’s a horrible affliction. And although it’s easy to throw stones, how many of us are actually saving lives. No one is perfect. Look at the church.

“But 99.9% of us don’t give up our life to saving those we don’t know. And be successful. I have great admiration for Charlie as a person and saver of lives.”

Cheyenne Tozzi, United Nations Ambassador

“I’m not prepared to get into the issue of Charlie’s professional conduct, but I do know that he has raised over $50 million for Brain Cancer Research and that is amazing.

“He is a family friend and saved my mother’s life.”

“Charlie Teo has contributed enormously to the field of neurosurgery. He’s also raised over $50 million for brain cancer research, which is a phenomenal achievement.

“He would be the first person I would get in touch with should a family member or myself be diagnosed with a brain tumour.

“I consider Charlie to be incredibly skilled and incredibly experienced and I hold him in high regard.”

“Charlie has been instrumental in changing the lives for the better of a number of my friends to date and for that, I thank him.”
