A fresh-faced councillor has been elected unopposed as Parramatta’s Deputy Mayor and may have been part of history while doing it.

‘Not a bad first day’: Parramatta Lord Mayor hosts Indian PM on first day of the job

A fresh-faced councillor has become Parramatta’s Deputy Lord Mayor at the age of 25.

Labor councillor Cameron Maclean was elected unopposed during a council meeting on Tuesday night after councillors Sameer Pandey and Patricia Prociv nominated the Epping ward representative, who accepted the position “with great humility”.

“I really do feel I’m in the right place at the right time – there’s so much occurring in the city, you couldn’t be in a more exciting local government area,’’ he said.

“We’re a city on the move but we mustn’t think the work is done and I so look forward to advocate for the growth of the city.’’

The Western Sydney University graduate was elected on to the council in December 2021 and represents the Epping ward, “living in what might be the last street in the city in Parramatta”.

“I walk in my backyard and I’m in Ryde council, so I know the neighbourhoods better than anybody and I’m keen to represent them,’’ he said.

Cr Maclean graduated with a bachelor of business majoring in economics and applied finance in May.

He will search for employment in the finance industry but counts his job on the council as his sole occupation presently.

Greens councillor Phil Bradley praised “the outstanding result” for Cr Maclean becoming the deputy before he pointed out his young age might have created a record for the council.

“He shows experience well beyond his age, and I’m not even sure what his age is,’’ Cr Bradley said.

On May 22, Cr Pandey made history when he became the first Lord Mayor in Australia to be born in India.

The next election for the mayor and deputy will be held in September.
