A gateway site to a booming southwest Sydney suburb could soon be home to a hotel and entertainment quarter as council considers a plan to transform the vacant property.

A planning proposal submitted to Camden Council seeks to make amendments to the local environmental plan to allow for the development of a site on the corner of Camden Valley Way and The Northern Road, adjacent to the Narellan Town Centre shopping centre.

The proposal seeks to increase the maximum building height at the development site from 25m to 75m for the proposed hotel tower and from 25m to 32m for the proposed podium, which will join the existing Narellan Town Centre building, on the northern side of Camden Valley Way.

Narellan Town Centre manager Brad Page said the proposal looked to construct a “statement building for a statement site”, but said the development was in the very early stages.

“What we are looking at doing is tapping into the area as there is a lack of accommodation in the area,” he told The Macarthur Chronicle.

“There is a lot of work happening and a lot of facilities being built, but there has not been a quality offering for accommodation and we want to address that.

“That location is the crossroads of the two main roads running through the region, it’s a high-profile site that is a statement for the entry to Narellan and the greater region.”

Mr Page said the team behind the planning proposal were big supporters of Narellan and the Camden Council area.

“We are all locals and we back the area,” he said.

The hotel would be built next to the existing Narellan Town Centre shopping centre.

“The proposal allows for about 180 rooms which is probably the sweet spot for hotels.

“The positive is this proposal addresses areas that are not addressed very well in the area, so the fact we do can this and give people a reason to stay in the area longer is a great thing for the region and for businesses.”

It’s not just a hotel on the cards, but the proposal would also allow for the construction of a cinema, childcare centre, entertainment centre and gym, however the accommodation is the first priority.

“It is the intention and vision for the planned hotel and entertainment complex to operate as a seamless extension of the existing retail centre, while creating a unique and iconic architectural gateway built form element which services the local area and draws tourists to the region,” a report submitted to Camden Council stated.

“The planned land uses will deliver a range of entertainment, dining, childcare, and recreational premises which enhance residents’ wellbeing and contribute to place making outcomes in the Town Centre.”

Camden Council are seeking submissions from the community on the proposal and will be taking feedback until September 5. To have your say or for more information, click here.
