P-plater on methamphetamines overtook unmarked cop car at almost 170km/h in Byron Shire, police allege

A P-plater allegedly overtook an unmarked police car at almost 170km/h on the Pacific Motorway in the Byron Shire – while under the influence of meth.

Byron Bay Highway Patrol officers were travelling north in an unmarked car on the Pacific Motorway near Brunswick Heads about 5.45pm on January 11.

Police allege a blue Kia Cerato overtook the patrol car at speed while failing to indicate numerous times and that it was speed checked at 167km/h.

“Police stopped the Kia and spoke with the 25-year-old female (driver), who produced her NSW P2 provisional licence, which is speed limited to 100km/h,” NSW Police alleged.

The woman was breath and drug tested and allegedly returned a positive reading for methamphetamines.

She was taken to Byron Bay Police Station and police allege she tested positive to the drug again on a follow up test.

The driver was issued infringement notices for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45 km/h as a provisional driver and two counts of not giving a change of direction signal with lights.

The woman’s licence was suspended on-the-spot for six months.

Police state officers have been awaiting oral fluid sample laboratory results before proceeding with further action.
