A North Coast police child abuse squad has been investigating reports a girl was sexually assaulted in a public toilet block at a Brunswick Heads park. Here’s what we know.

A North Coast police child abuse squad has been investigating reports a girl was sexually assaulted in a public toilet block at a Byron Shire park.

Parents took to social media to warn others and NSW Police subsequently confirmed an investigation of “a child sexual assault believed to have occurred at a public bathroom at Terrace Park, Brunswick Heads between mid-2022 and March this year”.

“Police from Ballina Child Abuse Squad and Byron Bay detectives have commenced inquiries and are investigating the incident,” a statement read.

It was initially stated on Facebook two girls aged five and eight had been assaulted, but it’s understood there has only been a single police report.

Earlier, a mother took to a Brunswick Heads community Facebook group to raise the alarm.

Brunswick Heads is a popular tourist destination in the Byron Shire.

“Please always accompany your children to the toilets and let your parent friends know this too. This area might feel super safe but clearly it isn’t,” she wrote.

“I know with the eight-year-old the dad was nearby swimming and the girl was just quickly popping into the loo.

“Very sad but yes definitely a warning for all parents to diligently watch their kids.”

Another user wrote: “This is devastating. Thank you for the warning to parents.”
