An intoxicated Mullumbimby woman keyed a car in an act of revenge after a road rage incident, a Northern Rivers court has heard.

Hayeh Moore faced Mullumbimby Local Court on Wednesday, pleading guilty to intentionally damaging property.

The 19-year-old was in an Hyundai i20 travelling in front of a Suzuki Swift along Brunswick Valley Way about 5.30pm on March 15, according to police documents.

The Hyundai driver performed a “brake check” in front of the Suzuki, “resulting in a road rage incident”.

Brake checking is tapping a vehicle’s brakes to deliberately cause a trailing driver to collide or take evasive action.

The Suzuki driver ignored the incident and travelled to Brunswick Terrace, Brunswick Heads, where she parked the car.

Some time later, the Hyundai was seen pulling up next to the Suzuki. Moore hopped out of the passenger seat and keyed both sides of the hatchback, the court heard.

Moore left “deep scratch marks along the paint of the vehicle”.

She hopped back in the Hyundai, according to a witness who reported the incident to Brunswick Heads Police Station.

Moore, who appeared in court with a spotty traffic record, told the court she was working part-time and planning to study abroad. She was drunk when she keyed the car.

Magistrate Karen Stafford classed Moore’s actions as a “revenge attack”.

She said a previous road rage incident did not limit Moore’s “moral responsibility” in the community.

“To commit an act of revenge like that, it doesn’t reduce your offending,” Ms Stafford said.

Moore was sentenced to a 12-month community corrections order and told she must pay $1500 in compensation.
