A Byron Bay man exposed and played with himself numerous times at Main Beach in front of women and children.

Morrison Schrader appeared in custody at Lismore Local Court on Thursday donning prison greens.

The 29-year-old kept his head down as he pleaded guilty to exposing himself in a public place.

Police facts state Schrader walked down to Byron Bay’s Main Beach about 11am on January 31 while staring at women, making them feel “uncomfortable”.

Schrader took off his clothes until he was down to his blue briefs before he entered the ocean, continuing to stare at the women nearby.

“(He) stood knee-deep in the water and pulled his briefs down exposing his (genitalia),” police state.

“(Schrader) played with his fully exposed (genitalia) for about a minute before pulling his brief back up.

“The witnesses stated (his genitalia) was erect and he was staring at the women nearby.”

There were also children nearby, police state.

Two women told police they felt “disturbed” and “disgusted” by Schrader’s behaviour and reported him to lifeguards before leaving the beach.

Schrader left the beach and returned moments later acting the same way.

“(He) continued this behaviour four or five times before grabbing his clothes and leaving,” police documents state.

Police were called and shown a picture of Schrader, taken by a witness, before they found him on Jonson St. He was arrested and questioned about his behaviour.

Schrader said: “Yeah I had my d--k out, I was washing the d--k cheese of it”. He also told officers he was homeless.

Schrader was taken to Byron Bay Police Station where he made full admissions to his behaviour and told officers he was cleaning his genitalia.

Officers state he had no ties to Byron Bay and had a history of similar behaviour.

Schrader was previously given a place order restriction to not enter Byron Bay and breached it six times in 2021, police facts state.

Defence lawyer Amy Redgrave Barker acknowledged his behaviour was concerning but argued he did have community ties as he felt connected to Byron Bay and enjoyed living there.

“He has been living in the (town) for a few months and visits Byron Bay’s homeless facility Fletcher Street Cottage,” she said.

“(Schrader) has a background of mental illness but has told me he can manage well in the community.”

Magistrate Mal Macpherson convicted Schrader and informed him there are several nude beaches in the Byron Bay area and the Main Beach was not one of them.

“If you carry on like that, you’ll end up inland pretty quickly,” he said.

“(Schrader) is running out of places he can go with the place restriction orders.”

Mr Macpherson sentenced him to a community corrections order for 12 months.
