A woman has been left in the intensive care unit at Tweed after she was struck by a car while crossing the road at Byron Bay – just 100 metres from her home.

She has now reached out to the group of people who rushed to help without a second thought.

Emergency services were called to Bayshore Dr following reports a female pedestrian had been hit by a Toyota Corolla around an intersection about 8pm on Saturday.

A nearby resident took to Facebook to describe “screams of pain” from the 36-year-old victim hit by the Toyota.

The woman was taken to Tweed Hospital.

He wrote he dashed out to see what was happening and found there were “already about 10 people there” helping the woman and trying to shield her from rain.

The man and other bystanders held umbrellas over the woman, comforted her and tried to keep her from slipping into unconsciousness.

The man said the victim “seemed to slip off” from time to time and those gathered were worried she would not make it through the ordeal.

She was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene and taken to Tweed Hospital for treatment of nasty injuries, including a broken arm.

No doubt to the relief of those who helped, she took to a Byron community Facebook page after the incident, expressing her heartfelt gratitude.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart … I know someone was holding my hand the whole time and patting my forehead to provide as much comfort as possible,” she wrote.

“I would love to connect and thank you in person once I get better and get home at the end of the week hopefully. I was 100m away from my home.”

The woman has spoken to the Byron Shire News and said she was still recovering in the ICU.

Residents have complained the area the woman was crossing was quite poorly lit.

Byron Shire Mayor Michael Lyon wrote he would be getting the council to look into the lighting situation in the area after the incident.

The driver of the Toyota, a 37-year-old man, returned a negative roadside breath test. He was given a traffic infringement notice for negligent driving on Monday.

He stayed on scene and spoke to authorities directly after the incident, it’s understood.

Byron Shire Council Mayor Michael Lyon commented and expressed his relief the woman was recovering.

“So sorry to hear this … he wrote.

Mr Lyon said he had reached out to the council’s director of infrastructure “to look into the lighting situation immediately”.
