Matthew Le Cornu charged with punching Byron Bay police

Police allege two officers had turned up to help a man whose ute was stuck when he turned on them, pushing and punching both of them.

A North Coast man charged with punching two police officers in Byron Bay has been refused bail.

The allegations against Matthew Charles Keith Le Cornu, 31, went before Byron Bay Local Court on Tuesday.

The Ocean Shores man has not entered any formal pleas to his charges of assaulting an officer in the execution of their duty causing actual bodily harm, assaulting police, resisting police, not complying with a direction under a public health order, failing to wear a mask and mid range drink-driving.

Police will allege officers were called to Kendall Street in Byron Bay after a ute became bogged about 2.20am on Tuesday.

Officers arrived at the scene a short time later and they found the driver, Mr Le Cornu, seated at the wheel of the vehicle with the engine running.

Police will allege the officers turned the vehicle off and tried to speak with the accused, who became aggressive and tried to push them away.

They will further allege Mr Le Cornu punched a male senior constable and a female constable in the face and head while they tried to remove him from the vehicle.

He was arrested after a brief struggle and taken to Byron Bay Police Station.

There, he allegedly returned a breath analysis reading of 0.083 and was formally charged with the allegations now before the court.

The police officers were taken to Byron Central Hospital where they received treatment for facial injuries and were later discharged.

In court, Mr Le Cornu was formally refused bail and the matter is due to return to court on Monday, September 20.

He is expected to face the court via video link from custody on that date.
