Adam James Pomeroy sentenced to jail for drink driving and driving without licence, Byron Bay

An intoxicated Gold Coast man and “habitual offender” without a driver’s licence has been jailed after being busted sipping on a bourbon and coke while cruising around Byron Bay.

An intoxicated Gold Coast man and “habitual offender” without a driver’s licence has been jailed after being busted sipping on a bourbon and coke while cruising around Byron Bay.

Pimpama man Adam James Pomeroy pleaded guilty at Byron Bay Local Court on Tuesday to driving while intoxicated and driving while disqualified.

Police facts state officers pulled over the 44-year-old father of five on Shirley St, Byron Bay on March 22 about 12pm.

Pomeroy told police: “I was doing the speed limit”, facts continue.

When officers asked him if he had consumed any alcohol he lifted up a half empty can of Jim Beam bourbon and cola and said: “I’m drinking one now”.

Pomeroy told officers he did not have a license.

Police facts state Pomeroy was slurring his speech, he smelled like alcohol and his eyes were glazed.

Officers did a roadside breath test which recorded a positive result and Pomeroy was arrested and taken to Byron Bay Police Station.

Pomeroy told officers he had consumed five cans of alcohol and a secondary breath test returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.148 – almost three times the legal limit.

Police facts state Pomeroy was quiet and respectful while in custody and showed remorse for his actions.

Officers labelled him a “habitual offender” in and stated his NSW traffic history was “appalling”, the facts further state.

Magistrate Karen Stafford sentenced Pomeroy to three-months in prison.

His driver’s licence was disqualified for six months and he must have an interlock for a year when he is allowed back on the road.

A conviction has been recorded.
