A North Coast brewery offering up a year of free rent for throwing a house party as part of a Instagram contest says a third of Gen Z are rocking up to parties rather than spending a bundle out on the town.

The colourful promotion by Byron Bay Brewery on the back of its new research involves hosts uploading party images to Instagram, picturing the company’s beer.

They are then judged by TikTok Australia’s Video of the Year winner Andy Davie.

Mr Davie said he was excited to help crown Australia’s best house party.

“I know Aussies have what it takes to create an epic house party and it definitely doesn’t depend on having a huge budget … you just need to bring good vibes and great mates,” he said.

The winner could get up to $36,000 in rent.

Lion Australia core beer marketing head Chris Allan said Byron has been hit hard by the national cost of living crisis and “half of the shire’s residents pay 30 per cent (or more) of their income in rent”.

He said the shire faced the worst rental stress in the region.

Asked if organisers had any concerns about encouraging anti-social behaviour by holding the competition, Mr Allan he said the company did not.

“The competition is available to Australians who are aged 18-plus. As part of their submission they agree to the terms and conditions which prohibit any displays of anti-social behaviour,” he said.

“We’re pumped to launch this competition to give Byron Bay Brewery drinkers the opportunity to win and have one less thing to worry about in 2024.”

The brewery’s research shows many party hosts no longer offer free food and drink because of increased pressure in the cost of living crisis, which has seen a rent hike of 30.4% impacting the average Aussie tenant.

Australians aged 18 and over can enter the competition by tagging Byron Bay Brewery’s Instagram page with #BBBhouseparty hashtag. Submissions can be uploaded via the brewery’s website.

The brewery’s competition, which also involves $100 Visa cards up for grabs weekly, is open until March 17.
