A doggie daycare has been pitched for a small Byron Shire town, with pets due to be taken into the facility by buggy.
Matt Walker Town Planning submitted a development application for the new animal boarding establishment at Brunswick Heads to Byron Shire Council earlier this month.
The doggie daycare building would be built at 78 Tandys Lane and cost an estimated $227,000.
There’s plans to have six car parks allocated for staff and customers.
Pets staying at the facility would be collected by the buggy. Plans state customers would not be able to drop their pooches off directly.
The application proposes a maximum 20 dogs at the facility per day and operations including daycare, as well as general feeding grooming and exercise.
Two fenced exercise areas would be put in place – one for small breeds and one for large breeds.
A dog pick-up and drop-off collection service covering Brunswick Heads, Mullumbimby, Byron Bay and Bangalow is also part of the plans.
The application states there would be minimal environmental impacts and vegetation would not need to be removed for the project to meet bushfire safety standards.
Those behind the development have pitched it as a positive addition to the local economy.
They have also raised improving the health and wellbeing of dogs and their owners.
The daycare would operate from 7am-7pm on Monday to Friday and 8am-6pm on weekends and public holidays. No dogs will be kept at the premises overnight.
The site is 29 hectares, there would be a floor area of 98 square metres and the project is due to reach a height of 6.7m.
Sound-absorbing material would need to be installed on walls and the ceiling to reduce the noise from dogs at the facility.
The site of the well-known Byron Bluesfest music festival is about 1500 metres southeast of the site of the proposed doggie daycare.
