Police have not ruled out foul play as officers investigate the bizarre disappearance of a man missing for more than two weeks on the state’s North Coast.

Those involved in the desperate search for Mullumbimby man Gage Wilson, 31, have been focusing on a body of water in dense bushland.

The 31-year-old Byron Shire man was reported missing on May 18.

His abandoned car was found smashed into a tree on Koonyum Range Rd, Wilsons Creek.

Mr Wilson’s distressed family have told the Byron Shire News they do not believe the disappearance was a case of misadventure.

He was last seen on Hakea Court, Mullumbimby about 5am on May 18.

On Wednesday, Tweed-Byron Police Detective Acting Inspector Donna Tutt said the search had been particularly difficult due to “dense bushland and steep rainforest” at Wilsons Creek.

She said Mr Wilson’s family was “distraught” over his disappearance and along with the community had helped search the area “daily”.

NSW Police and SES personnel have conducted several searches of the area since May 18, including the deployment of police dogs trained to find bodies.

“Later this week we will be deploying police divers to dive a body of water in Wilsons Creek,” Insp Tutt said.

She said police could not yet rule out foul play in their investigation.

Whether Mr Wilson may have crossed the border into Queensland, Insp Tutt said NSW Police were liaising with Qld Police on the matter.

When asked if Mr Wilson’s vehicle had been forensically examined, Insp Tutt said a small amount of blood was found and may not be linked to the car crash itself.

Mr Wilson, who is on the autism spectrum, is described as being of caucasian appearance, 183cm tall with short brown hair and has a star tattoos on his arm and a triangle tattoo on his wrist.

There is a Facebook page called Can You Help Us Find Gage.

A GoFundMe has been organised by Mr Wilson’s family.

Police are urging residents in the local area to check their properties for any signs of him.
