Chris Hemsworth has backed opposition to a proposed tourism development at Linnaeus Estate in Broken Head

The Hollywood star, who has a mansion nearby, has stood “shoulder-to-shoulder” with a traditional custodian of Ngangabal country who has publicly stated she does not endorse the proposed development.

Hollywood star Chris Hemsworth has thrown his support behind opposition to a cabin development proposed for a Broken Head property.

A development application for Linnaeus Estate was on public exhibition with Byron Shire Council until Wednesday, May 19.

The proposal for 27 new cabins and other works was lodged with the council on April 13.

The applicant, Broken Head Coastal Foundation Pty Ltd, is also seeking to permitted use of 14 “private education accommodation units” to become eco tourist units.

Aunty Lois Cook, a traditional custodian of Ngangabal country in the Bundjalung nation, has voiced her opposition for the development in a video posted to the Friends of Seven Mile Instagram page, also shared by Chris Hemsworth.

“I am shocked to hear that the zoning was changed without consulting the community nor the Indigenous community,” Ms Cook said.

“We were promised that this site would be used for educational purposes only.

“As senior elder and law woman who holds authority on our cultural lands I do not endorse the development of this site.”

Mr Hemsworth backed Ms Cook’s statement in his own video.

“I stand shoulder-to-shoulder in solidarity with Aunty Lois Cook in opposition to the tourist development at Seven Mile Beach,” he said.

“I fully support traditional custodians to be able to comfortably tell their peoples’ stories to preserve and protect their homelands.

“This proposed development would have a direct impact on these sacred and significant indigenous sites.”

Mr Hemsworth and wife Elsa Pataky built a mega mansion on a nearby property within the Broken Head area.
