Byron Community Market could be permanently relocated to Railway Park.

Byron Shire Council has asked members of the community to provide input into the proposed new location.

“The Byron Community Market has been operating from the Main Beach foreshore since 2019, when it was moved from the Butler Street Reserve due to works on the Byron Bay Bypass project,” the council said in a statement.

“The future use of Butler Street Reserve is awaiting outcomes of site investigations so is uncertain.”

There are ongoing investigations into per-and-poly fluoroalkyl (PFAS) contamination of groundwater beneath the Butler Street Reserve.

“Council is proposing to permanently relocate the market to Railway Park and surrounds in the town centre.”

If it goes ahead, this proposed move would include the closure of Jonson St next to the park during set up hours on the monthly market days.

The market runs on the first Sunday of the month from 6am to 6pm and involves about 300 stalls.

Feedback can be given to the council until May 27.
