A northern NSW man has been accused of thrashing an inn manager while on bail for alleged stealing and affray incidents, a court has heard.
Ben Charter, 41, appeared before Byron Bay Local Court on Monday via video link accused of two breaches of bail on July 5 and July 13.
A police prosecutor said Charter is alleged to have breached bail conditions not to drink alcohol and a residence condition after he was charged with affray and stealing property from a person worth less than $2000 earlier this year.
Police will allege Charter was at a motor inn drinking with friends on Tuesday, July 5 when the motor inn’s manager told Charter to go back to his room and called his care worker.
According to court documents, police allege Charter crossed the car park in a confrontational manner and swung his hand at another man, connecting with his face.
The alleged offence is understood to have been captured on CCTV.
Police will allege Charter breached his bail again on July 13.
A defence lawyer for Charter told the court his client had breached a residence condition as he had sustained a lower back wound that occurred outside his home on Wednesday, July 13.
At the time, the court heard Charter’s girlfriend had attempted to stitch his wound up herself which resulted in him experiencing “immense pain”, the court heard.
“It was a home hospital situation,” the defence lawyer told the court.
Charter was transported to Tweeds Head Hospital by police and the court heard he said he could not recall how he received this injury – which may have been a stab wound.
Charter was refused bail following the alleged breaches.
A hearing for the affray will proceed at Tweed Heads Local Court on September 9, while a hearing for the stealing will proceed at Byron Bay Local Court on November 29.
