Five teens dead after Buxton crash

The group of five teenagers who died in a horror crash at Buxton told their parents there were “just a few of them” heading on a McDonald’s run, before hopping in Tyrell Edwards’ ute for the trip that would be their last.

Sources have told The Daily Telegraph that some among the five claimed that they were “going to Tahmoor and back to get Macca’s”, before Edwards allegedly lost control and crashed into a tree on East Pde at Buxton — 10 minutes from Tahmoor — at 8pm on Tuesday.

In the middle of the night, police officers had the dreadful task of the knocking on the doors of five families, including Lily Tan, the grandmother and carer of Picton High School student Tyrese Bechard.

The 15-year-old’s aunt Maria Ma said Tyrese and his sister had been taken in by his grandmother after the premature death of their mother in her late-20s.

“Tyrese and his sister lived with my mum (Ms Tan). The police went to her house at 12.30 and notified her, she just said, ‘Oh my God, how did it happen?’,” Ms Ma said. “She’s already lost a daughter and now she’s lost a grandson.

“He was a very, very loving child, he was really caring. He loved boxing and he loved riding his BMX bike … Tyrese was planning to leave school and get a trade, he wanted to become an electrician.”

Police allege Edwards was driving his Nissan Navara “at high speed” before losing control and bouncing off several trees, before the four-door ute landed on its side.

Killed alongside Tyrese were teenagers Lily Van de Putte, 14, Summer Williams, 15, Antonio Desisto, 16, and another girl, 14, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

‘I HAVE TO GO SEE MY SON IN A F**KING MORGUE’: DAD’S DEVASTATION

The father of a teenage boy killed in a horror crash at Buxton said he was dreading having to attend the morgue to identify his son’s body, as the man police allege was responsible for the teen’s death was refused bail in court.

Exaven Desisto spoke to media outside Picton courthouse on Thursday, saying his son Antonio was a “happy” and “humble” teen and that the pair shared a special bond.

“He was my best friend, he literally never left my f**king’ side,” an emotional Mr Desisto said.

“But I have to go see my son in a f**king morgue, I have to go see him, whatever’s left of him and I don’t even want to go see him but I need to see him.”

Mr Desisto said he didn’t have many friends but his son was his best mate.

“We did everything together, I brought him up,” he said.

“He was the most happy, humble [kid], he used to go to church and pray, and he used to pray before every meal he put in his mouth.”

Mr Desisto sat in the public gallery at Picton Local Court on Thursday as 18-year-old Tyrell Edwards applied for release on bail following his arrest on Wednesday.

Police allege Edwards was driving his Nissan Navara “at high speed” along East Parade on Tuesday evening before he lost control and hit a tree, killing Antonio, along with four other passengers including Lily Van De Putte and Tyrese Bechard.

Edwards was refused bail, with the court hearing he had a history of speeding and had already lost his licence twice.

Outside court, Mr Desisto said he felt for the families of the other children killed in the crash.

“My heart goes out to all the families [who had kids that were] with Toni in the car, I can’t imagine … it’s just heartbreaking for everyone and for all of the people that have to deal with it,” he said.
