A bull has been put down after the horse float it was travelling in rolled on the M1.

The float was being towed by a ute which flipped 200 metres north of Ku-ring-gai Chase overpass near Mount Colah.

Emergency services arrived at the busy stretch of road around 7.20am and a vet was called.

An NSW Police spokesman confirmed to The Daily Telegraph that the bull had been euthanised.

Northbound motorists were at a snail crawl for much of the morning as traffic backed up more than three kilometres during the morning peak.

All northbound lanes reopened just after 10am.
