When former table tennis pro Linn Sandstrom lost her first professional boxing match the “haters” sure hated.
“A lot of people wanted to see me fail,” Sandstrom said of her crushing defeat in a Tim Tszyu undercard bout three years ago.
“They didn’t think I deserved to be in boxing, they said I would never get an opportunity on such a big stage ever again.
“In that fight I blacked out and then backstage I had a massive panic attack.
“But I kept telling myself don’t let it define you, one day you will become a world champion and I’m so glad I stayed strong.”
Sandstrom who has been travelling the world training and fighting and learning, is home in Sydney and ready to claim that world title – this time fighting in the same card as Tim Tszyu’s brother Nikita.
The Brazilian-born fighter who was raised in Sweden and now calls Bondi home will fight for the WBA super flyweight word title at the Hordern Pavilion on Wednesday.
After the torrid start to her boxing career Sandstrom gained a following as the “road warrior” sharing vision on her social media of her fighting in Costa Rica, Philippines, Sweden, UK and Thailand.
“People said I would never get a chance again, not after what happened, people didn’t want me to show up and were celebrating me failing but I just kept showing up,” she said.
“I kept telling myself every day ‘I’m gonna show up and it will pay off’.”
“I’m so thankful that (promoter) No Limit Boxing kept supporting me and I’ve been travelling all over the world getting as much experience as possible and now I’m here and ready for this. I feel great to be honest.”
