Chilled out canines will be unleashing their inner beach bum on the sand this summer, with Hawaiian shirts for hounds turning into the must-have pet accessory as the weather warms up.
Experts say the loose-fitting tropical wear not only makes pups look cool but keeps them cool as well. They can also shield pets from toxic allergens.
“A lot of people think it may be over the top but then they realise the shirts can be great for protection,” Sacred Pet Boutique’s Helen Vernon said.
“It puts another barrier between dogs and their allergy along with their fur. And if they happen to look good too then that’s even better.”
Ms Vernon said the shirts were one of the most popular items in her online boutique, selling about 10 or more a week on average in summer.
“A lot of the people who buy from us regularly have Instagram accounts for their dogs. People who have animal social media accounts want their pets to be seen in new and interesting things,” she said.
DoggyDolly Australia owner Kellie Finn said she frequently sells out of the popular garment.
“At the moment we’ve released a new print and I have five or six people waiting for them.” she said.
“I usually order in about 40 and take them to dog shows and they just disappear.”
Ms Finn said male pet owners in particular were huge fans of the Hawaiian shirt.
A vast majority of pet owners are willing to fork out the big bucks for pet clothing and accessories, research from the Real Insurance Pet Data report showed.
One in five owners said they had bought jackets for their beloved pups and almost 17 per cent said they dished out on buying coats.
Almost 70 per cent of those surveyed said they bought new clothing and accessories for their dog in the last six months.
