Vigil for Bondi victim Faraz Tahir

Dozens of members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community have gathered at Bondi Junction to pray and pay their respects to Faraz Tahir, who was brutally murdered in Saturday’s attack.

Members laid flowers and stood hands in prayer for all those who died.

Mr Tahir was one of Cauchi’s first victims having tried to stop the attacker but was stabbed in the process.

Imam I.H. Kauser said Mr Tahir was very dedicated to his community.

“He was a very joyful, very loving person, especially to the most poor and needy people, he always participated in charity work,” he said.

Sombre shoppers return to malls across Sydney

People in Sydney’s eastern suburbs haven’t been deterred from returning to shopping centres after the brutal Bondi Junction Westfield attacks which saw six people stabbed to death and the perpetrator gunned down by a lone female police officer.

At nearby Westfield Eastgardens, just less than 7km away, there appeared to be a sombre mood throughout the building, although families and individuals continued to go about their business after the horrific scenes on Saturday afternoon.

People perused through shops, and ate their breakfast while children ran down escalators and shared laughs with their parents.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, three generations of an eastern suburbs family, shared their own personal perspectives of Saturday’s attacks.

All three wished not to be named.

The grandmother, an 81-year-old who has lived in the east her whole life was brought to tears upon hearing the devastating news.

It was too close to home.

She was cooking dinner and couldn’t muster up the courage to eat her meal as the feeling of sickness overwhelmed her throughout the evening.

Her daughter, the mother of a Kambala School student, said at points she checked over her shoulder, but said it wasn’t appropriate to “live in fear”.

While eager to not let yesterday’s tragedy affect their lives, the mother was thankful her daughter was too tired to meet up with her friends, as they do almost every Saturday at Westfield Bondi.

She said her daughter was now “nervous” and “scared” to go into the city after her friends captured images “they should never have to see”.

The mother appealed for more action on treating mental health, saying there’s people in the community who aren’t properly medicated and in the right environment.

A Bondi beach man shopping with his wife and son, said he too was “shocked” when he heard news while watching the NRL not too far away.

As Bondi Junction Westfield remains a crime scene and closed to the public, Westfield Eastgardens is the closest shopping centre for most of the eastern suburbs community.

The man said he also wasn’t apprehensive to shop with his family in light of the attacks.

Fifth Bondi stabbing victim named

Pikria Darchia has been named as the fifth stabbing victim.

The 55-year-old Bondi Junction woman was killed on Saturday along with five other shoppers at the Westfield complex.

Killer's family: 'No issues with the police officer who shot our son'

The family of Joel Cauchi, who killed six people and injured many others in a frenzied stabbing attack at Westfield Bondi Junction have broken their silence.

In a statement released on their behalf by Queensland police, Cauchi’s parents, Andrew and Michele, said Joel’s actions were “truly horrific”.

“We are absolutely devastated by the traumatic events that occurred in Sydney yesterday,” they said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims and those still undergoing treatment at this time.

“Joel’s actions were truly horrific and we are still trying to comprehend what has happened. He has battled with mental health issues since he was a teenager.

“We are in contact with both the NSW Police Force and Queensland Police Service and have no issues with the police officer who shot our son as she was only doing her job to protect others and we hope she is coping alright.”

Bondi Westfield heroes ‘Bollard Men’ revealed

The heroic men who grabbed bollards and confronted the Bondi Junction mass killer have been revealed as two Frenchmen, Damien Guerot and Silas Despreaux.

Mr Guerot, who has been dubbed “bollard man” by thousands of grateful people on social media grabbed the metal post inside the shopping centre and confronted killer Joel Cauchi, 40, as he made his way up an escalator.

His friend Silas Despreaux, a French tradie from Randwick, was alongside him, with both men visiting Bondi Westfield to go to the gym.

When they realised Cauchi was on a killing spree they sprung into action.

Incredible vision captured during the terrifying mass murder shows a brave but determined Mr Guerot hold out the bollard in front of him and stop the madman from getting to an area where dozens of children were playing on the first day of school holidays.

Mr Despreaux also grabbed a bollard and confronted the killer at another time during the attack.

It’s understood Mr Guerot and Mr Despreaux were also the pair who led heroic NSW Police officer Amy Scott to the killer’s location, where she then took him down.

Pakistani refugee Faraz Tahir has been identifed as the fourth victim of the Bondi Junction massacre.

Mr Tahir came to Australia a year ago after seeking refuge from persecution in his home country.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Australia released a statement in tribute of Mr Tahir.

"It is with heavy hearts that we also mourn the loss of Faraz Tahir, a cherished member of our community and a dedicated security guard who tragically lost his life while serving the public during this attack," the statement read.

Bondi massacre survivor released from hospital

The Wineberg family are counting their blessings after Sydney mother Yvonne Wineberg was released from hospital after being stabbed by Bondi knifeman Joel Cauchi.

Ms Wineberg, in her 40s, was released from St Vincent’s Hospital this morning to the relief of husband Zac Wineberg and son Jake, who said he was still “shaken” by the “horrible” event.

“I feel so sorry for my mum, to have to go through something like this,” he said.

“She’s the kindest person I know and it hurts me to know she had to go through something like that. It’s always the innocent ones who get hurt.

“I’m happy she’s alive. There are six people – seven, including the guy who did it – that (aren’t).”

Bondi killer's parents hid knives from him

Mass murderer Joel Cauchi called police to claim “domestic violence” after his parents hid knives from him, it can be revealed.

Cauchi is understood to have made the call to police who investigated the incident but did not take any action as no domestic violence had been committed.

When asked whether Cauchi had called the police on his family because they had taken away his knives, Assistant Commissioner Roger Lowe, said they were aware of an event in 2023.

"We are aware of an event in 2023 which we are investigating but again that forms part of the more broader inquiries into his conduct, his health, his interaction with treating practitioners, his recent whereabouts in New South Wales, where he might be living and what’s changed from a person who is 40 and has for a number of years functioned in society to commit such a horrific crime," he said.

"We responded to an event in early 2023 with him and his family and will form subject to the investigations.

"But he's never been charged with any offense relating to knives, he’s never been found in possession of knives in a manner that's unlawful that would warrant prosecution."

Sydney prepares to honour Bondi massacre victims

Flags on Sydney landmarks will be lowered to half mast from Monday morning to mark the lives lost in the Bondi Junction knife attack.

The Opera House sails will also be lit with a black ribbon to honour the victims from 6pm on Monday.
