A Bondi girl’s 10th birthday was ruined when her beloved pet bird — a loyal Telegraph reader — went missing after flying off to check out the local footy on Sunday.

Reggie the cockatiel — who has been an avid reader of The Daily Telegraph — took off from his Bondi home today on 10-year-old Molly James’ special day.

Reggie reads The Daily Telegraph most mornings with Molly’s mum Julie Garvey.

Reggie was last seen making a “beeline” from Bennett St, Bondi to Waverley Park about 3.30pm.

Molly’s mother Julie Garvey said Reggie normally read The Daily Telegraph with her every morning.

Before taking flight, Reggie was resting on the shoulder of Molly’s 13-year-old brother Angus.

“He heard the whistles of the local football match and must have headed straight there,” Ms Garvey said.

“My son forgot he was on his shoulder because he is on his shoulder all the time.”

“When Angus went to put his sneakers out the back door Reg just took off.

“Of course my daughter was saying ‘you have ruined my birthday and ruined my life’. The poor boy feels bad enough already.

“We have doorknocked the entire Park Pde and Bennett St but nobody has seen him.”

Reggie, or Reg as he is more commonly known, has a good vocabulary picked up from reading the paper most mornings.

“If you call him Reggie or Reg he will come to you,” Ms Garvey said.

“He will say peekaboo, love you, Reg Reg, whatcha doing? Molly and Angus.”
