Mustapha Ghamrawi charged over Blaxland pedestrian crash

A truck driver has been charged over allegations he was involved in a fatal crash with a 21-year-old pedestrian. Police also allege he was disqualified from driving at the time.

A man police allege was disqualified from driving has been charged following a fatal crash with a pedestrian in the Blue Mountains yesterday.

Just after 2.15pm on Monday (November 1), emergency services were called to the Great Western Highway, near the intersection of Layton Avenue, at Blaxland, following reports a pedestrian had been struck by a truck.

The pedestrian – a 21-year-old woman – who had reportedly been walking on the footpath at the time, was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, died at the scene.

Officers attached to Blue Mountains Police Area Command and the Crash Investigation Unit established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Truck driver Mustapha Ghamrawi, 54, was not injured and taken to hospital for mandatory testing, before being taken to Katoomba Police Station.

Police will allege the driver was disqualified from driving.

He was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death – drive manner dangerous, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period and negligent driving (occasioning death).

The Penrith man was refused bail and his case was heard at Penrith Local Court today (November 2).

Ghamrawi did not appear in court or via AVL but his lawyer, Abbas Soukie, did appear via audiovisual link.

He told the court he would not be applying for bail for his client.

The matter will return before the courts in early 2022.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
