Blacktown Quarter: New details on huge $2bn overhaul of Blacktown city centre

The brainchild of late developer giant Lang Walker, the massive renewal will be called Blacktown Quarter with the project to include premium office space, education and health facilities, alongside restaurants and retail shops.

New details have been released on the $2bn dollar revamp of Blacktown, which will transform the tired city centre into a world-class western Sydney jobs hub to rival Parramatta Square.

The brainchild of late Walker Corporation founder Lang Walker, the massive renewal will be called Blacktown Quarter with the project to include premium office spaces, education and health facilities, alongside restaurants and retail shops.

“Lang was passionate about Walker delivering a new town centre for Blacktown linking people-friendly spaces with thousands of new jobs, healthcare and learning opportunities and his vision has become our reality,” Walker managing director and CEO David Gallant said.

The next step for the booming proposal will be a mass survey of residents, with Walker and Blacktown City Council to host a series of pop-up community feedback sessions in the CBD and throughout the wider area in the coming months.

An online survey will also be launched for Blacktown residents to further provide their opinion on what the future city centre should look like.

“We are excited to be out and about talking to the community over the coming months where our team will get vital input from locals to ensure our masterplan caters to the needs of both current and future Blacktown generations,” Mr Gallant said.

Blacktown City Council Mayor Tony Bleasdale, who signed the contract with Walker Co last year for the revamp, said the investment would help the booming city flourish.

“We know Blacktown Quarter will transform and energise our city centre, bringing huge economic and social benefits for the people of Blacktown and Western Sydney,” Mayor Bleasdale said.

“Local businesses will flourish and thousands of jobs will be created. We encourage everyone to take a look and add your voice as Walker Corporation helps us build a brighter future for our city.”

The Blacktown Quarter development will create more than 1000 construction jobs over five years, while space for more than 4,500 permanent jobs will be built in a move which is expected by Walker Co to pump an extra $1bn annually into the local economy.

Plans for the precinct, previously revealed last year by The Daily Telegraph, reveal a vision for health facilities like the Blacktown Brain and Spinal Institute within the quarter.

Blacktown Quarter follows on from the Walker-led Parramatta Square development, which has now become a booming jobs hub in western Sydney.

Lang Walker died last month aged 78.

His legacy includes not just Parramatta Square and Blacktown Quarter but other developments across Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Queensland spread over 1200 projects and 40,000 homes, while his business also built 45,000 homes abroad in Malaysia.

Work also began last week on a new world-class medical research facility named after the developer at Campbelltown Hospital.
