Tennis bad boy Bernard Tomic wants a second chance.
The “new and improved” 29-year-old sports star has vowed to put dating on hold, has gone vegan, given up alcohol, is embracing a new attitude, wants to patch things up with Lleyton Hewitt, and is focusing on achieving his goal of breaking the world’s top 10 players.
“You won’t be seeing the same attitude when I take to the court for the Australian Open in January,” Tomic told Saturday Confidential from a Gold Coast gym on Friday.
“I have matured.
“Me saying I don’t care, lashing out, and the ego I showed, that is my defence mechanism.
“I am going to harness that and use it in a positive way.
“I used to only put in 75 per cent when I was playing and now I am going to give it everything.
“I have been on a spiritual journey too and am trying to develop and change the type of person I am.”
Tomic’s personal life and partying has often overshadowed his tennis in recent years. However, he says he will now put all that behind him and focus on what he truly loves — playing tennis.
“I am doing this for myself. I have had a really solid career but I haven’t had the career I probably should have, and now it is time to turn things around,” he said.
“I have stopped partying. I have stopped drinking and, even over Christmas, won’t have a drink.”
Just months after splitting with OnlyFans and Love Island star Vanessa Sierra, Tomic said he had learnt many lessons from the romance.
“Everything was good at the start with Vanessa, but it just wasn’t meant to be,” he said.
“I hope the best for her, I really do.”
Next time, Tomic says he will be on the hunt for a woman who can stick with him for the long term.
“Next time I am in a relationship, I want to find real love,” he said.
“I want someone who is honest and has my best interest at heart.
“People often only have their best interests at heart.
“I have had a lot of girlfriends in my life and it has been a rollercoaster.
“With all the travelling I do, it can get lonely.
“Tennis is a very isolating sport, so sometimes a girlfriend works well.”
With a fresh new haircut and new-found perspective, Tomic has his sights set on a career comeback, after falling to number 254 in the world rankings.
While he admits he lost his way, he has also enjoyed success in his career, with four titles and three ATP Masters quarter-final appearances to his name, and a career-high world ranking of 17 in 2016. These are the stats he hopes to achieve once again after overhauling his diet and training regimen.
“I am training two to three times a day,” he said.
“I need to work hard, that’s for sure. There is not much time.
“I have done it twice before … I can do it again. It just takes time.”
