A day after Ben Roberts-Smith broke down in a Sydney courtroom detailing how he shot an Afghan teenager, the Victoria Cross recipient was spotted relaxing in the company of his new partner.
Mr Roberts-Smith enjoyed lunch and a stroll in Sydney with 28-year-old Sarah Matulin, who flew down from Queensland for the long weekend.
The couple arrived at CHI by Lotus at 2.30pm and were seen kissing and cuddling over lunch, then two hours later enjoyed drinks at Barangaroo House.
They were first photographed together at the Magic Millions horse race on the Gold Coast in January.
The pair met while Ms Matulin was working at Channel 7 in Queensland, where Mr Roberts-Smith works as a general manager.
Mr Roberts-Smith will return to the Federal Court on Tuesday for the second week of his defamation case against Nine and three of its journalists over allegations of bullying, war crimes and murder during his tour of Afghanistan.
On Friday, Mr Roberts-Smith denied kicking an unarmed Afghan shepherd off a cliff, saying “malicious” journalists had cast him into a “bloody nightmare”.
The SAS veteran broke down reliving the moment he stormed a machinegun nest and was forced to kill a teenage insurgent — the event that secured him a Victoria Cross exactly 11 years ago.
The respondents are relying on a truth defence, and in their court documents have outlined details to six alleged unlawful killings in Afghanistan.
Mr Roberts-Smith has squarely denied allegations he murdered six unarmed persons under confinement on various missions in Afghanistan.
“I’ve never killed an unarmed prisoner,” he told the court on Friday.
