THE SECOND victim who died in an alleged stabbing and hammer attack in Bega in the state’s south was a former police officer.
Former senior constable Michael Horne, 54, died in hospital on Sunday afternoon.
Murry Deakin, 20, was charged on Saturday with murder and two counts of wound with intent to murder over the stabbing of his grandmother Gail Winner, 61, and her husband Thomas Winner, 71 and the alleged carjacking and hammer attack on a 55-year-old man an hour later.
Police allege Deakin attacked his grandparents in their home on Friday where he had been living in recent weeks.
Mrs Winner was rushed to South East Regional Hospital but died and Thomas was flown to Canberra Hospital in a critical condition.
An hour after the attack, police allege Deakin carjacked Mr Horne 20km away in Bournda, hitting him in the head with a hammer.
Deakin allegedly stole the man’s car, crashed it into bushland nearby and made off on foot before he was arrested and taken to hospital for a mental health assessment.
He did not apply for bail and was formally denied bail when faced court for the first time on Sunday.
Deakin is now facing a second murder charge.
He is due to reappear in the same court on Monday.
