Barangaroo project: First look at Sydney’s new $8b development

Sydneysiders have been watching the Barangaroo project be developed for years, but now a first look at what it might finally look like can be revealed.

IT’S the final piece to Sydney’s $8 billion puzzle and, after years of planning, those behind the project have offered a first glimpse into what it may look like.

Glamorous artist’s impressions can be revealed for the first time showing just what Sydneysiders can expect from the massive Central Barangaroo development when construction finishes in 2024.

The project is the last in a long line of towers that have transformed the Harbourside suburb as part of the state government’s massive renewal project.

Standing in stark contrast to the dizzyingly high towers on the southern end of Barangaroo, the central project is being depicted as almost a natural oasis away from the bricks and steel that overshadow the suburb.

Unlike the streets nearby, Central Barangaroo will have a 2ha waterfront park and cultural spaces billed as a “lifestyle getaway”.

The rest of the space will be filled with laneways, shops, cafes and restaurants.

“Our goal is to create a truly exceptional precinct that is beautiful, welcoming to all, with a variety of well designed indoor and outdoor public spaces that can be enjoyed at all times of the year,” developer Aqualand’s director Roy McCoy said.

The developer believes it will be the benchmark for modern workspaces once complete, offering offices that look out over a lush waterfront park.

The project is estimated to bring over 22,000 jobs to the precinct and pump more than $5bn into the economy as a result.

“A vital feature of Central Barangaroo is its accessibility,” Mr McCoy said.

“The delivery of the new metro station, the new ferry wharves on the Barangaroo foreshore, new pedestrian links to Millers Point, Walsh Bay and the Rocks, and the connections back into the city through Wynyard Walk and Gas Lane, will make this precinct one of the most accessible and connected places for workers, residents, and visitors in Australia.”

Retail giant Scentre, who own the Westfield Shopping Centre chain, are being tasked with delivering retail space across the precinct.

So far, the renewal project is estimated to have generated $17.8bn to the state economy since it began.
