BASKING in the shadows of the Sydney Harbour Bridge this oasis in the heart of Sydney now resembles the fabled Hanging Gardens of Babylon.
What was once a 6ha shipping container yard has been transformed into a mecca of greenery at Barangaroo Reserve.
It will open to the public on August 22.
The garden is part of the $6 billion construction at the site where Sydneysiders can walk along the headland, the naturalistic cove and sandstone foreshore.
It has been 100 years since the public have been able to access the area.
While all are welcomed to enjoy the park there will be one exclusion, with the former Sydney Ports’ Harbour Control Tower approved to be demolished.
The tower was opened in 1974 but has not been used since 2011 and the NSW government has given the green light for it to be brought down.
“We welcome the decision to approve our application to demolish the tower,” CEO of the Barangaroo Delivery authority Craig van der Laan said.
“This will allow us to complete the vision of creating a modern naturalistic interpretation of the headland which was once there.”
The Barangaroo Delivery Authority is having a welcome celebration which starts on September 6 and runs every weekend during September, October and November.
The first event will be a giant picnic with live music and dance. The celebrations will be hosted in the 120m by 45m Cutaway space beneath Barangaroo.
