TENNIS: Stan Wawrinka said he came in with no goal of winning the US Open but will go home the champion after upsetting world No.1 and title holder Novak Djokovic.
The 31-year-old Swiss star became the oldest singles winner at Flushing Meadows since 35-year-old Australian Ken Rosewall claimed the crown in 1970.
He is also the first man over 30 to win in New York since Pete Sampras in 2002.
Wawrinka held his nerve when Djokovic twice called medical time-outs in the fourth set, appearing to go against the rules by stopping play during games.
He finally won 6-7 6-4 7-5 6-3 to add the US Open to the 2015 French Open and 2014 Australian Open titles he already held.
"This is amazing. I came here without the goal of winning it but just to step on the court trying to win,” said Wawrinka, who has now won his last 11 finals in tournaments.
"My goal is to give everything I have to be the best I can.”
