SOAPBOX: I’m not so great at it, but I have fun

EVEN if I’m not so great at it I’m going to keep doing it just because I like it!

EVEN if I'm not so great at it I'm going to keep doing it just because I like it!

Today I'm talking fishing.

In tribal culture people learn from their elders, those in the tribe who are actually good at things.

My most successful fishing adventures have been with people who really know what they are doing.

If there is a fishing adventure to be had, I'm in!

A few special adventures come to mind.

The first in Vanuatu where I was lucky enough to snag a big mahi-mahi.

Now every bloke on the boat wanted to take the rod out of my hands.

But I stuck it out, rolling with the advice that was flowing and landed this sparkling silver and blue creature on the deck.

I only had moments to admire it before the locals jumped on it to end its life and throw it on ice.

Another I spent absolutely terrified as I glided the Ord River in a tiny tinnie awash with monster crocs, bringing beautiful big barra into the boat.

On my most recent adventures, while I did not land any fish, I had an amazing amount of fun just fishing on our local beaches.

I've decided that I don't have to be good at it because even just in the last few days I've utilised 420 years of fishing knowledge.

No kidding, that's a guesstimate of the combined age of the seven blokes I harassed with fish chat.

Apparently I'm not supposed to ask what others are using for bait.

But I believe if you don't ask you don't learn anything.
