Police charge five after gun allegedly fired in brawl involving up to 60 people at Wardell in Northern Rivers

Police have hit three men and two women with charges after a wild brawl reportedly involving up to 60 people – and a gun – in northern NSW. Here’s what we know.

Police have hit three men and two women with charges after a massive brawl reportedly involving up to 60 people – and a gun – in northern NSW.

NSW Police officers were called to Bath St in the village of Wardell, between Ballina and Broadwater, “after 50-60 people gathered outside a property”.

Police received a “further report that a firearm was allegedly discharged”.

The group left the area before the arrival of police shortly after 7.40pm on August 18, police state.

Richmond Police District officers from the Proactive Crime Team launched an investigation and on Tuesday a 53-year-old woman was arrested at Ballina on an outstanding warrant.

Police then pounced again and arrested a 29-year-old woman, an 18-year-old man and a 30-year-old man on Wednesday. A 36-year-old man has also been arrested.

The older woman has been charged with affray and faced Ballina Local Court on Wednesday.

She was granted conditional bail to reappear on October 10.

The younger woman and two men have also been charged with affray, police state.

The 29-year-old woman has been granted conditional bail to face the same court on October 17, while the 30-year-old man was granted conditional bail to face Ballina court on October 18.

The 36-year-old man has been charged with gun offences, police state. He was granted conditional bail to face the same court on September 12.

The 18-year-old man also faced the court on Wednesday. More information is being sought from police and the courts.

Police nquiries were ongoing on Thursday.
