Buckendoon man Sheldon Ashley Stewart charged with assault after confrontation with off-duty police officer at Evans Head

A labourer from the Lismore area confronted an off-duty police officer in Evans Head screaming “you took my caravan and you f--ked my wife”, a court heard.

A Northern Rivers man has faced court after assaulting an off-duty police officer in a fit of rage, accusing him of taking his caravan and having sex with his wife.

Buckendoon labourer Sheldon Ashley Stewart pleaded guilty at Ballina Local Court on Friday to common assault and intimidation.

The police officer was driving his Mitsubishi Pajero on Oak St in Evans Head when Stewart began tailgating him in his vehicle.

The 50-year-old was pointing and yelling at the officer with an aggravated expression on his face, court documents state.

The officer pulled over to allow Stewart to overtake but Steward “manoeuvred his car around the victim’s car boxing him into the kerb preventing him from driving forward”.

Stewart exited his car and walked up the window of the Pajero.

“F--k you … you took my caravan and you f--ked my wife. I‘m going to kill you,” the court heard Stewart told him.

Stewart struck the off-duty officer’s right shoulder and held the door closed as the victim tried to get out of the Pajero, court documents state.

“Don’t get out of the car, stay in the f--king car,” he said.

The officer got out of the car and tried to defend himself, police facts state.

“I am still a serving police officer,” he said.

“Just go away, f--k off. I’m still a cop.”

Stewart threatened “I’ll get you” before he got back into his car and drove off, veering around a truck and on to the wrong side of the road, court documents state.

“I‘ll get you,” the court heard Stewart said before getting back into his car.

The officer reported pain in his shoulder after the confrontation.

Stewart’s case was adjourned to the court on March 23.
