OPINION: Stoner Sloth an idea so crazy it just might work

WHEN I logged in to Facebook at the weekend I was bombarded by friends talking about someone called "stoner sloth".

At first I thought nothing of it, but then after more and more people were posting I decided to pop on to YouTube and see what all the fuss was about.

So just who is this "stoner sloth"? Well it's the invention of the NSW government and its purpose is to get teens to think about the dangers of smoking cannabis.

And before I forget, it's a person in a giant sloth suit.

The campaign's videos - featuring "stoner sloth" being too cumbersome to join in with friends or pass salt and failing in school, have been widely panned as a massive failure.

But are they?

If the NSW government simply made an education video telling people not to take drugs, would the whole country be talking about it? I doubt it.

There's every chance whoever designed this campaign knew they needed to do something a little weird to get noticed.
