OPINION: Flying the Aussie flag with pride

APPARENTLY findings from a University of Western Australia study show that if you fly an Australian flag on your car you're more likely to be a racist.

It's hard to argue with figures, but frankly I don't agree with the findings.

To me, flying the flag is just one way of showing how proud you are to live in the greatest country on the planet.

Time for a disclaimer: I'm a migrant from South Africa who came to Australia in 1985 and became a citizen in 1988.

But I wonder why the study concentrated on people with flags on cars.

What about the people who fly the flag on flagpoles?

Maybe that could be the subject of another study.

Maybe it's the people I mix with, but I have seen very little racism in Australia.

Most Australians I have met are interested in people from other cultures, as long as we pull our weight when it comes to working and paying taxes.

And coming from one of the most overtly racist countries in the world I think I'm fairly good at spotting racism.
