QUEENSLAND Reds North Queensland participation officer Rama Chand has questioned whether former National Rugby League star turned American footballer Jarryd Hayne will be able to make it in rugby sevens.

In a surprise move Hayne quit the NFL to try and make Fiji's Olympics Rugby Sevens' team.

Chand said it was a boost to the profile of sport.

"Will he (Hayne) make the squad is another thing," he said.

"Fiji has probably one of the most talented squads."

Chand said he thought Hayne would find it tough but he was definitely a great athlete.

Former Mackay rugby league player Marmin Barba tried to crack into Australia's rugby sevens squad, without success.

"The reality is sevens is a ridiculous workload in terms of training," Chand said.

"The conditioning you need to play sevens and the amount of punishment they get is a big challenge."

However Chand said he thought Hayne would definitely give it a good crack.
