Ballina Shire Council has published a development application for the return of the Lennox Head Community Markets to Williams Reserve, Lennox Head.

The markets are proposed to operate twice a month, with around 120 individual temporary stalls.

According to council’s documents, “the site is well suited to support the markets operation as it is of an appropriate scale and character for the locality and would have positive socio-economic effects”.

“It is therefore considered that the subject application deserves favourable consideration by Ballina Shire Council.”

In March, the Lennox Head Community Market introduced its new management team, including Lennox Head residents and market general manager, Greg Curry.

Market operation — as proposed in the application — would be:

  • Load in times 5.30am to 8am
  • Market operation 8am to 3pm
  • Load out times 3pm to 5pm

Council has not proposed yet an initial date for the markets to start operating, or what days of the week it will operate.

The general area proposed for the market is on Williams Reserve, next to and around the Lennox Head Cultural and Community Centre.

The proposal indicated that the markets site will be maintained, kept free of rubbish and cleaned up at the end of each market day.

“Markets staff and stall holders will manage any negative visual impacts associated waste,” the document stated.

“Approximately eight rubbish bins in four dedicated waste areas will be provided within the market area for public use on market day; including general waste and recycling.”

Market management also proposed to encourage positive waste initiatives for the markets, including:

  • No styrofoam or any other non-recyclable waste is to be deposited at the markets site at any time.
  • Commercial drinks must be in recyclable containers (i.e. cans and PET bottles). Water is to be sold in recyclable containers or paper cups.
  • The market will be a plastic-bag free site and stallholders will be advised not to bring plastic bags. Calico bags will be for sale at the site.

The market is also proposing a no-pet policy, with an exception to the rule for assistance dogs.

Livestock will also not be sold at the market, unless with written consent of both market management and Ballina Shire Council.

The Lennox Markets team is formed by Kate Hardman, Greg Curry, Graham Double and Kristina Oddestad.

In regards to parking and traffic, the application stated that there is “sufficient capacity within 400m level walking distance to the site to cater for the existing parking demand.”

“Although the proposal will generate some additional traffic, a proportion of this will be non-vehicular given the many facilities for pedestrians and cyclists to and within the village.”

After the markets were cancelled at the beginning of the Covid pandemic in 2020, the last manager left the role, and then the council called for expressions of interest in October and November 2020.

The proposal will be on public exhibition at council’s website until August 19.
