CAROLINE Wilson is one of Australia's most respected sports journalists.

She is harsh but fair and her knowledge of Australian rules football is unquestionable.

She is articulate and even for someone like myself who is a dyed in the wool rugby league fan I can read her stories with interest.

Caroline Wilson is also a woman, and it would be fair to say that by virtue it places her in the minority of sports journalists in the country.

Eddie McGuire is also a journalist of sorts, he is one of the AFL's biggest power brokers and the chairman of the Collingwood Football Club.

He has been involved in the game for longer than most of the current crop of professional players have been alive and his passion for the game is evident in every medium that he works in, whether it is radio, television or print.

Eddie McGuire is a man.

So when he said on a radio program recently that someone would pay to hold Caroline Wilson's head underwater it was touted by many as a misogynistic act of domestic violence.

Lets get a few things straight, McGuire's comments do not constitute domestic violence in any way shape or form nor in my view are they sexist.

They were inappropriate and not in good taste but they were nothing more than that.

As a journalist, part of the deal is putting your work and views out in the public arena to spark debate and discussion.

Caroline Wilson is very good at that but her work is not always flattering to the subjects she writes about so I dare say there would be a few people who would like to see her head held under water.

Just as I am sure their would be a considerable amount of people who would like to do that to Eddie McGuire.

I wonder when everybody started being so sensitive about this stuff.

This is not about a man being disrespectful to a women, it is about a man being jealous of a women who is better at his job than him.

McGuire: In fact I reckon we should start the campaign for a one-person slide next year. Caroline Wilson. And I'll put in 10 grand straight away - make it 20. (laughing) And if she stays under, 50. (laughing)

James Brayshaw: No, yep, Straight in.

Danny Frawley: I'll be in amongst it Ed.

McGuire: Is Duck there?

Wayne Carey: Yes, I'm here mate.

McGuire: Duck's in. Danny's in - already spoken up.

Frawley: Yeah I'm in Ed.

McGuire: I could do an auction here today.

Frawley: I'll actually jump in and make sure she doesn't - I'll hold her under, Ed.

McGuire: I reckon we could charge 10,000 for everyone to stand around the outside and bomb her.

Damien Barrett: I'm on Caro's side now, Ed. I'm on Caro's side these days, Ed.

McGuire: She'll burn you like everyone else, mate. She's like the black widow. She just sucks you in and gets you and you start talking to her and then bang! She gets you.

Brayshaw: If you ran that auction from down there, I reckon you'd start grabbing some bids out of the seats too. There'd be money piling in everywhere.
