A man who suffered serious injuries in a two-car crash near Alstonville had to be freed from his crumpled Toyota by the State Emergency Service and Fire and Rescue.
Police state the 49-year-old man was driving a Toyota Camry west on the Bruxner Hwy at Alstonville, near Ballina, just before 6pm on Monday.
The vehicle collided with a Holden Commodore travelling east, near the Wardell Rd overpass.
“Passing motorists assisted the driver of the Toyota – a 49-year-old man – who was freed from the vehicle with the assistance of the SES and Fire and Rescue NSW,” police state.
The man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and flown to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.
The driver of the Commodore, a 70-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Lismore Base Hospital in a stable condition.
Richmond Police District has been investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The highway was closed in both directions for a little over an hour following the incident.
Officers have called on witnesses, including anyone with dashcam footage, to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
