VALENTINE'S Day is a little over a week away, and now is the time to start laying some groundwork if you don't plan on spending alone.

If you have had your eye on someone for a while, or are struggling to break through the immovable force known as the 'friend zone', the national day of love is the day to take a chance.

Here are some tips to ensure that man or woman you've had your eye on says yes to a date on February 14.

Pick up lines

They can be cheesier than the dairy section at the supermarket, but that's what makes them so good.

Your potential partner doesn't want to talk about conspiracy theories involving 9/11, they want to laugh.

If you're stuck for the perfect line, give these a try:

If you were a vegetable, you'd be a cute-cumber

I hope you know CPR, because you took my breath away.

Compliments

Has a woman ever complained about hearing she has a great smile, or a man ever whined after hearing he looks like he has been hitting the gym?

No!

Everybody has something special about them, or a characteristic that you enjoy, so let them know and ensure a smile on their face.

Old school romance

Many a social comment has been made about the death of romance in the 'good ol' days', so make it your mission to bring it back.

Sending a big bouquet of flowers or chocolates to a workplace will certainly get their attention more than standing outside their window with an oversized stereo playing Kenny Loggins.

Ask them out

Take a chance, you never know your luck!

There are plenty of events taking place across Warwick on Valentine's Day, so take the plunge and treat them to a magical date they'll never forget.

The Horse and Jockey and Criterion are just two venues with events lined up, not to mention the array of classy restaurants across town.

If all else fails...

Head to your favourite take away shop, purchase half the store and head home to watch your favourite show.

It's what I've got pencilled into my diary, and has never let me down before.
