A baby boy has died after suffering critical burns when a fire broke out in a southwest Sydney house.
Authorities said the baby, who was only six weeks old, was severely burnt when the blaze erupted in the kitchen of the home on Darwin Rd in Campbelltown just after 2pm on Wednesday.
Paramedics rushed the baby to Campbelltown hospital, but doctors could not save him and he died a short time after arriving.
Another toddler was also treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.
Neighbours told The Daily Telegraph that screeches could be heard from the baby’s mother.
Amber Knapp and her family only live a few houses away from the house where the fire happened.
Ms Knapp was at home with her child when she stepped out and saw smoke fumes.
“The entire situation is devastating, my heart really goes out to the family,” she said.
“It really makes you think it could happen to anyone.”
Video footage showed a police officer carrying a child to an ambulance in a quiet suburban street.

“Emergency services were called to the home on Darwin Road about 2.15pm today (Wednesday 9 November 2022) where they located a six-week-old baby with serious burns.
“Officers from Campbelltown City Police Area Command attended and were told a small fire broke out in the kitchen of the home, injuring the baby.
“He was taken to Campbelltown Hospital; however, died shortly after arriving.
“An investigation into the incident is continuing and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.”
