Thousands of Australians today will wake up, put on their best flannelette shirts and roll up their sleeves to “flaunt their flanno” for farmers across the country.
To celebrate Flanno for a Farmer Day, people nationwide are being called by Farm Angels – a national farmer support charity, to rock their best plaid patterned shirts for the rest of the month.
This comes as Australian farmers face increasing challenges in their respective states, including natural disasters, mental health struggles, and rising production costs.
Shocking statistics reveal nearly half of Australian farmers have experienced depression, two – thirds have experienced anxiety and close to half have had thoughts of self – harm or suicide.
Tragically, one farmer takes their life every 10 days, a rate 59 per cent higher than that for non – farmers.
Funds raised from the intitiave are set to go towards essential emotional and financial support for thousands of farmers struggling across the country, as well as food hampers, personalised support and care packs to be sent out to remote areas.
Farm Angels Founder Natasha Johnston said it is critical Australians work to support the farming community who are the “unsung heroes of our beautiful country.”
“We believe in supporting those that work so hard to put food on our tables and clothes on our backs,” she said.
