Sydney based tech juggernaut Atlassian is hiring 5000 more people to triple its workforce – but they will not all be expected to come into the company’s new office.

“We’re tripling our footprint – over 7,000 Australians will soon work for Atlassian. We know that these people are out there, but they’re not just in Sydney,” Atlassian co-chief executive and co-founder Scott Farquhar said.

“They’re in every pocket of Australia, from Byron Bay to Broome. That’s why our TEAM Anywhere policy, which allows staff to work from anywhere in Australia, is key to getting us to this growth goal,” he said.

The company is building a new $1.4 billion 40-storey hybrid timber tower at Central’s tech precinct as its new global headquarters. But the company does not expect every member of its workforce to live in Sydney and come to the office every day.

Atlassian announced its TEAM Anywhere policy, which allows employees to choose where they work and how often they come into the office, in August 2020. Since then a quarter of its workforce has moved out of Sydney.

Mr Farquhar believes many people will still want to work in the office at least some of the time but the Team Anywhere policy allows Atlassian to recruit people without them having to move.

“There’s an opportunity now to make Australia a global tech destination if industry, government, education and employers can put bolstering the tech talent pipeline at the top of the agenda,” he said.

The new building at Central will be the biggest precinct of its kind in Australia and will be a home to hundreds of Aussie start-up companies which can collaborate and grow in a supportive environment.

“Projects like Tech Central are moving us in the right direction, and we‘re excited to see the talent vortex that projects like this will create,” Mr Farquhar said.
